Austin Energy is owned by the City of Austin and serves most city residents and some surrounding communities. It has the highest scores because of its energy efficiency programs/rebates as well as its renewable energy commitments and many offerings to customers. It has committed to a non-carbon future by 2035 through closure of its coal plant and gas plants, though it was not able to meet its goal to end coal use by 2022 due to failure to reach an agreement with the co-owner of the plant (LCRA). The utility has also embraced community solar and local solar, advanced energy codes and green building programs to lower energy demand.
