With more than 300,000 accounts, Pedernales Electric Cooperative is the largest electric cooperative in the United States in terms of land area and customers, serving much of the Texas Hill Country West of Austin and San Antonio and areas further West. More than 80 years old, PEC includes important cities like Johnson City and Junction. While the utility is a wholesale customer of the Lower Rio Colorado Authority, their contract does allow them to separately secure energy from other entities, or own their own power plant. While PEC has made some recent investments in energy savings and community solar programs -- including a very low "green" rate as part of that community solar program -- they have not been active on larger utility-scale renewable efforts and other clean energy efforts.
